In the start a story, both heroes are of noble stature and obtain great strength. Supernatural forces-gods, angels, demons- interest themselves in the action and intervene fron time to time. In first part of the poem, Beowulf matures little, as he possesses heroic qualities in abundance from the start. In some cases, physical accommodation is necessary as well. Throughout the story there are many elements of Christian teachings: that man survives only through the protection of God, that all earthly gifts flow from God, and that the proper bearing of man is to be humble and unselfish csis. In Beowulf, much of the action takes place in or around Hrothgar's hall of Heorot, but Beowulf also goes to the to kill the swamp hag in her underwater lair, and his fight against the dragon is in his home of Geatland.
Beowulf heroically slays Grendel and becomes the target of his mother. In modern times, they are often thought of as role models for others to live up to, and are generally humble, honest, and not afraid to put others in front of themselves. A way Beowulf demonstrates his heroism is the way he stays true to the Geats by honoring them. Later, he also battles the swamp hag and the dragon. A prime example is when he tricks Grendel and tears off Grendel's arm.
So is Beowulf a hero? He risks his life in many of his adventures in the poem to achieve these goals. The good is represented by the brave warriors, both Danes and Geats, while the evil is represented by the threatening monsters in the form of Grendel, his mother, and the dragon. Grendel started to attack Heorot every single night, killing Danish warriors and sometimes even eating them. Beowulf ruled the Geats for 50 years, until his realm was terrorized by a fire-breathing after a thief stole a golden cup from its hoard of treasure. Grendel seemed much more intellectual from his point of view.
He is a true hero by honoring his country and exerting his power and strength to protect others. Bravery and Vulnerability Later in life, Beowulf becomes King of the Geats and is responsible for guiding his kingdom. A hero is noted for his or her actions for being brave, powerful, and acting with honor. Beowulf was proclaimed king and decided to avenge Heardred and to help Eadgils become king of Sweden. Even though he is famous for his massive strength, Beowulf has other attributes that are noticeable other than his strength. This made the Anglos-Saxons unsuccessful, since they cease to exist. That explains why 'Beowulf' is so popular to college students.
The setting is vast in scope, covering nations or the world. The Anglo-Saxons believed that a hero was strong and courageous, but humble and kind as well. Beowulf is a perfect example of an epic hero who is a representative of his time because of his super-human strength, his strong love for the people, his fearless of death, and his ethical personality including his strong moral characteristics common of his time. In the battle with Grendel's mother there is yet another example of Beowulf's super-human strength when Beowulf lifts a huge, massive sword and kills Grendel's mother with it. These last words truly wrap up the character of Beowulf as the courageous and loyal hero he is, knowing that his actions will have made his name memorable for ages to come.
In line 219 of Grendel's mother, it tells how Beowulf killed her. These qualities alone are not enough to make a hero. During the night, Grendel arrived to attack the sleeping men and devoured one of the other Geats before seizing Beowulf. His body was burned on a funeral pyre, and his ashes buried in a by the sea. By this dialogue, he expresses how much he cares for his soldiers and respects his men and country. Those men get drunk and swear they will defeat Grendel, and pride forces them to do what they said they would: fight Grendel. An epic hero is someone who has superman qualities, who embodies the values of his society, and who is larger than life. In fact the ships of Beowulf's day would have been only a little bigger than a large ship's tender from the 18th Century.
